Cucklington, Wincanton, Blackmore Vale, Somerset

Nestling amidst leafy tree lined lanes in the secret folds of the Northern Blackmore Vale, Cucklington is a tiny, ancient village of natural stone houses on the borders of Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire. A place of spectacular views and skies, and yet only 2 miles from the A303 (2 hours from London) the nearest town is Wincanton (3 miles), once an important coaching stop on the main route to and from the West Country, and now home of a famous Race Course with it’s adjoining Golf Course.

This is a beautiful, unspoilt and secret part of the Blackmore Vale – still missed by many tourists dashing even further west to Devon and Cornwall. It's an area made famous by the novels of Thomas Hardy – visit Casterbridge (Dorchester), Marlot (Marnhull), or take a day to visit Lyme Regis with it's famous Cob, described by Jane Austen in 'Persuasion', and also home of the late John Fowles (The French Lieutenant's Woman). Or if you are a T E Lawrence fan (Lawrence of Arabia), why not visit his home - Clouds Hill at Bovington, only one mile from the Tank Museum. Many of the Stately Homes mentioned above have been used extensively in period films and the area remains a favourite of filmmakers.

The area is blessed with a wealth of National Trust jewels – Stourhead, Montacute, Kingston Lacy, Barrington Court to name just a few. Other places of interest within easy reach are Longleat, the historic Elizabethan home of the Marquis of Bath with it’s famous Safari Park; Cheddar Gorge and Caves; Wookey Hole; Glastonbury with its famous Tor (said to be Arthur’s Camelot); the ancient Saxon hill top town of Shaftesbury, with its famous Gold Hill known to locals as Hovis Hill after that well known TV advertisement; genteel Sherborne with it’s ancient Abbey, the ruins of Sir Walter Raleigh’s castle, and the present Sherborne Castle. The Cathedral Cities of Salisbury, Bath and Wells are a short journey away, and the South Coast is an easy drive through picturesque countryside – Lyme Regis, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Chesil Beach, Golden Cap, and on the way perhaps visit Monkey World and The Tank Museum. Closer to home is the famous Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, and Haynes Motor Museum.
